MP Andrea Leadsom continues sex education campaign
MP Andrea Leadsom has met with members of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to discuss the possibility of the body rating school sex education material.
The move is part of the South Northamptonshire politicians ongoing campaign on Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) in schools.
It follows meetings with Government ministers and concerned parents regarding images shown to children as young as six in sex education lessons.
The BBFC expressed surprise that the BBC do not have their SRE material rated when they voluntarily have programmes such as ‘The Blue Planet’ rated, despite there being no sensitive or controversial content and no requirement to have it rated as it is a documentary.
Mrs Leadsom said: “It seems bizarre that when some parents are so deeply concerned at what they consider to be sensitive material being shown to their children, the BBC and Channel 4 have chosen not to have their SRE material rated by an independent agency.
“The BBFC have assured me there is nothing to stop providers of SRE material seeking their help and receiving advice from the BBFC on what material is suitable for different age groups.”
